‘Well Just Do This’
You ever have that moment with a friend or co-worker where they express their concern or woes over something related to their health, and you respond with an unsolicited nugget of wisdom? The “well just do (insert wisdom nugget here)” and everything will be solved.
You probably have. And in that moment, you likely had a thought like ‘ wow that sounded really smart’.
But then the conversation moves on, you are diligently listening to the other person and your introspection is lost.
Well dig deep people, because I am asking you to dig up one of those little wisdom nuggets. One of the ones you gave to someone else. One of the ones that you know you could likely benefit from.
What was it?
Are you experiencing a problem in which you would expect a friend of colleague to maybe give you the same advice?
Do you think that if you “just did it”, you might see positive results?
Think on it, and as you do I will share my experience.
So, this person in my life was complaining about not having enough time or energy to do an activity that they truly enjoy.
My response was, “well if you just put your phone down, you’d gain like 15 minutes in the morning to your thing”.
Now Beetles and Bards, that advice is great in theory. But if any of your have tried this, you will know it is easier said than done. So while the advice was valid and if followed would have gained the person time, they did not do it. And honestly neither did I.
But for the purposes of today, while the advice failed the first time around, I would like to suggest that I can still use it.
Now thinking of your wisdom nugget. Was it also something easier said than done? If that is the case, can we workshop it so that it is a bit easier for yourself to follow?
From my example, the workshop question is - how can I help myself reduce my screentime?
My answer was to actually use the do not disturb function on my phone and put it out of reach while I’m at work. Now this does not help the time at home or out and about, but it does begin to tackle part of the problem.
Can your nugget have a similar workshop? Is there a question you can ask or modification that you can make that will help it become a little easier to put into practice?
I bet there is!
If you can’t think of a way to change it, try asking that person you originally gave it to - maybe you can workshop it together!
