Learning Log 4/11/25

This weeks learning log is brought to you by Dr. Alexandra Verge’s presentation to the Nova Scotia Naturopathic Conference a couple weeks ago!
I was reviewing my notes on cholesterol and menopause and wanted to share a few things I took away!
Here is the Learning Log Scoop:
During menopause:
• LDL ("bad") cholesterol can go up
• Triglycerides can go up
• HDL ("good") cholesterol can go up, down or stay the same

But wait, there's more!
Age plays a role too. Between 50-60, LDL typically increases by 39 mg/dL, regardless of menopausal status! So we can't hang the cholesterol change hat all on the menopause hook!

Why does this matter?
These changes, combined with shifts in blood sugar and insulin levels, can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. This is especially crucial if you have pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension.

Pro tip: Regular cholesterol panels are key. Talk to your healthcare provider about monitoring your levels and potential lifestyle modifications to keep your heart healthy during this transition.

Thank you again to Dr. Verge, ND for the reminders and insights! Looking forward to bringing this information to clinical practice!
